Archon App Reviews

Instatnt classic! Great strategy and action game rolled into one!

This is a remake of a classic game most people played on The Commodore 64. React Games took a classic game and did a wonderful job remaking it! The game was remade with attention to detail! The developer kept all of what made the original game great while at the same time wisely chossing which areas to update for modern gaming. This game is a real treat for fans of the classic and a great experience for those who never played! Thank you React Games for bringing Archon to my iphone!

Updated Retro Fun!

It takes me back to my youth. Well done, fun update to a classic.

Good additions.

Wow! New game mode of Conquest rocks! It totally wets my craving for a singleplayer campaign. Great app. I love Archon. Great job. Suggest this the chess fans.

Best game for Iphone

This is by far the best game for hte Iphone! Its amazing!

Appreciate this, the greatest of the "forgotten" games!!!

Im so proud to be from a generation that hears the name "Archon" and thinks fondly back to the days when Electronic Arts elegantly packaged this work of genius. What a concept! Does it get any geekier than this? Highly unlikely. Theres more goodness in the free version of this classic than a majority of the full versions you find in the App Store. But please do yourselves and the developers a favor and buy this game now. Dont put it off anymore. Even without the new update today, Archon would be cheap at ten times the price. You read that correctly. Think about it! Its like chess where your pieces have powers and abilities. Not only that, but the action combat sequences really make you earn that square. It just begs the question--could Archon II: Adept be far behind? I hope not. Id also like to see a new version of this gem come to the PC and Mac! Please say itll happen and I can die happy. One more thing--is there any way the old Commodore 64 version could be included as an unlockable feature? That would be a reason to buy an iPhone in and of itself. Thank you so much for bringing back one of my all-time favorite games. It shows class and sophistication like no other developer. Bless you.

Dissapointing

Slow responsive shooting system hurts this game.

Great game!

Ive had this game for a few days now, and I am really loving it. I actually stopped playing a game on my XBox 360 at one point to come back to this! I played the original Archon back in the day (and Archon 2 -- any plans to bring that one back?), so I bought this game partly out of nostalgia. The gameplay definitely holds up on the iPhone, though. Im really enjoying the new Ascension map with its leveling system, too. It adds a new layer of play that seems like a natural outgrowth from the original. Im less impressed with the Invictis map, though. The powerups make it too luck-based for my taste. And while Im complaining, it seems to me that the golem on the Light side moves way too slowly to be useful on the Invictis map for some reason (I couldnt tell if all the creatures had been slowed to make room for speed powerups or if this was some sort of framerate issue). This might be okay if he had a huge amount of health, but I actually got pushed into a corner and killed by a banshee in just two shots. I dont think the golem should be able to be pushed around by anybody, much less a banshee (as this makes her a bit overpowered). Also, I remember the summoning power giving more options in the original game. Could you guys bring back the Juggernaut? Please? Overall, excellent work!

yobill in charge

A worthy adaptation of the C64 classic for the iPhone. Its not exactly like the original, but the best aspects of the game are pretty much replicated here. Just like the original, the combat interface is a bit clunky, though the Knights/Trolls seem to fare better here than in the original, which is welcome. Moving around the board and casting spells is more difficult here than in the original, but this is likely something I will adjust to in time. Overall, I highly recommend for those who fondly remember playing this till 3AM on the Commod yobill breaking into this dbags comments- I am the master of Arch- Classic. Any of you chumps think you can take my top ranking away, bring it on. I smoke all yall. yobill out.

Much improved!

I really love this game. Played the original growing up, and this one here has tremendous potential to be the perfect iPhone game. I had this at 3 stars because there was bad controls as far as firing while moving. I played this again after patching and the problem is gone, this is now sooo much fun and frankly its just very replayable. 5 stars now

great game!

this is an awesome game and everything I would say has already been said in other reviews. all I ask now is WHEN WILL MULTIPLAYER COME??!?! the computer is sometimes too predictable and multiplayer would add an awesome new element to the game

Fantastic, just like the old times on my Apple//e

What a pleasure it is to play Archon again. Thanks! Keep up the good work.

Well worth the price

...and even better on your PC at home. The tilt feature is surprisingly helpful for iPhone game play.

Nice

The 80s at their best!

I used to play this game to death on my Commodore Amiga 1000 back in the middle 1980s. Very simple and fun gameplay. Thanks to the devs for the port!

Multiplayer update?

A wifi (or iPhone 3Gs or 4) multiplayer option would be ideally suited to this game, so PLEASE provide this enhancement soon!

Controls need to be improved

As others have pointed out the controls during combat are subpar for the remake of this classic. Latest update vastly improved this game. Thx to the dev for listening. This is a must have game. 5 star all the way.

All nostalgic

For those of you that remember this game of ole, you will enjoy this trip down memory lane. I did. However, it makes me long to grab the NES from the closet and connect it. This is a game in which the touch control just dont quite ring true. The game requires a bit of zig zagging which takes a while to master (if you can at all). Also the landscape changes much quicker in this version which is a pain in that it has resulted in the death of my poor unicorn many times. Not to mention the virtual d-pad actually overlaps the bottom left part of the battle screen, making a small portion of it a blindspot/deathtrap. Overall a good game. 4 out of my 5 remaining knights give it a thumbs up.

Ok

Good trip down memory lane. Use tilt to control the character in battle. Having the computer characters increase in ability when the human player is ahead is an aspect of 1985 era games that should have been left behind. It seems weird in 2010

Wow!

I played this for countless hours as a teen. I typed the name in on a whim, and was shocked to find a version for my iPhone/iPad. Its as good as I remember, and a perfect example of a board game/ video game hybrid that takes full advantage of this platform. Leave the MMORPGs to the PC gamers, the simulations to the console gamers. Mobile gamers want quick, strategic, replayable games. Give me multiplayer and an HD version and you may have the perfect app for this platform.

Great make of great game

This game is right on with what I use to play even back on my Apple IIc, great job!
